I've run across a few traders that sent files represented as flac only to find out they were upconverted mp3 & find that some ppl believe converting mp3 to flac will restore the original audio quality. That is absolute nonsense!
If you want to prove it to yourself, download a program called spectro then rip a song from a cd to flac & look at the frequency response graph. Most genuine flacs will reach 22k +. The best mp3 can do is about 20k but more commonly around 19k, 128k will be around 15k.
K, now take that flac you ripped & convert it to mp3 320 then look at the difference in the freq graph. Now take that mp3 & convert it back to flac & look at the freq graph, it'll look identical to the mp3 you just converted, not the flac.
Once you convert a flac, wav or other lossless to mp3, it's forever stripped of it's highest potential & can never be recovered. Same thing goes for converting say a 128 mp3 to 320 mp3. All you are doing is creating an inflated file size that will have the same mediocre 128 audio & any serious collector will spot it right off so if you're a trader & think you can get away with upconverting files to pass off as better than what it is, you're reputation will soon be in the gutter. Now you know.
An exception to this rule is M4A & AAC. I know for a fact that a high quality M4A the size of a 320 can be converted to flac with no detectable difference in spectrum response or loss of audio quality. I'm assuming AAC will do the same 'cuz they are closely related tho I've not done a comparison yet.
