I've seen so many heated articles about this & almost don't want to comment about it. The majority say they can't tell the difference & to tell the truth I sometimes find it hard on much of the popular stuff. I really depends on the complexity of the production as in how intricate the spacial effects are. Some recordings go to great effort on depth perception & imaging.
Here's where the difference can best be heard. Listening to a recording of an elaborate caliber, you get the sense like your inside the music with flac, switch over to mp3 & that sense of being surrounded by the sound collapses to a noticeable degree. Flacs have better dynamic range & definition which equates to a denser more powerful punch you can more feel than hear.
Agreed, most recordings today with typical production quality have nearly equal tone quality but having heard more elaborate productions where you can tell the difference just bugs my psyche so why would I want to cheat myself of anything I could be missing & just go with what's technically proven best.
Music is kind of like reading a book or eating, some get into a deeper experience of how well the story is put together & the illusion it inspires, others just want to get the gist of what's going on or content with hamburger helper while others have a palette only for gourmet. It's just a matter of acquired taste.
So that's my take short & sweet. What's yours?
