Opening remarks

Until recently I hadn't really thought about critiquing the various reissues against each other. If I decided I wanted to check a copy against what I have in my library, I just kept the best sounding copy & discarded the others not paying much attention to it's source so other than a few mental notes, never set out to do a hardcore side by side comparison on my editor so from here on, I'll be posting comparison notes.

From my past experience I've had a chance to compare alot of hi-rez cd's against remasters I made from mostly mass circulation issues & if the hi-rez were remastered or not, very little did I hear to my liking in sound quality however they definitely have much better resolution & better spectro's than the common issued cd's & I get much better results creating remasters from them that really stand out to replace my older copies.

So far I'm finding sacd's are more consistent in delivering respectable quality. Japanese issues look to be 2nd but a crap shoot on consistentency. Some are near spot on, alot are respectable, some not & a few are brickwalled or tone savagely assaulted into unsalvageable sonic garbage.

There's a few other hi-rez brands but haven't had enough exposure to them to form an opinion except most mfsl's I've found have the muddiest boring audio of all but good on resolution so they are salvageable to do some better remastering.

Recently had access to Rush's 2112 in a Japan issue, an mfsl & a 2009 remaster to compare against a common issue of my own remaster, the source of it I don't remember. None of them had tone quality as good as mine but the Japan issue was close & the mfsl was last with pretty boring audio which I've found is pretty common with mfsl's.

BTO 1 & 2 japan shm review

BTO II was the 1st album I ever bought back in '73 & it's audio was awesome on a mid grade radio shack receiver & mid grade 3-way floor speakers. These 2 BTO shm's are no where near that level of impressive. Really muddy audio on BTO II... 1 was not as bad but neither captured the true dynamics of those albums however they had good resolution & spectro's thus were superior to my own common cd's I have of this band. After doing my own remasters from these issues, I created a better audio experience like they should properly sound & better copies to replace my others with.

Aerosmith's 1st album review of Sony's vs Columbia's issue.

When I remastered the common Columbia issue of this album, it took quite a bit of resculpturing to get it sounding decent, it was quite muddy from my recollection so I was spot checking the spectro's on those remasters & saw they looked weak. I looked to see if there was another issue of this album available & ran across a Sony issue. It was sonicly well balanced but I improved it more with some of my magic tweeking & the spectro was good n strong on sony's issue.

Doors Morrison Hotel hybrid SACD Review

I don't have any idea if this was remastered but some trax were better than others. Maggie Mcgill was really muddy, the rest pretty bland as for tone quality however spectro & resolution proved to be better than my common cd issue & made some super remasters from this SACD.
