They sound as good as flac!
No joke! I did a comparison of a high grade m4a converted from lossless on spectro & it equals flac in frequency response. Doing side by side audio sampling, I surprisingly found m4a sometimes sounded a tad better. Pretty remarkable for a file size equal to 320 mp3.
As most I-tunes buyers are aware, they sell music in this format & a good bit tests as hi-rez but it's a crap shoot if you get lossless quality copies. They don't give any indication what grade audio you're getting & I've got some real crap equivalent to a 128 mp3.... yuk!
If you're looking to reduce your lossless collection to the smallest possible file size for portable use & retain superior audio, this is a good choice. I get super copies using the free Freac converter to make m4a copies of my flacs but there's another format called opus that can astonishingly produce lossless audio quality at half the size of 320 mp3 & you can read more about that in another thread.
