A consumer reports style version of audio fakes & rip offs
I try to get as much of my music in lossless as I can & every now & then I'm finding some of the cd's or lossless digital I get that isn't genuine.
I get really pissed of bands who once had a cd in genuine cd quaility then reissue it again as an mp3 cd & stab their fans in the back sending out junk & think it's ok. Hey bands, you're butchering your music & legacy! Where's your pride? If you think I'm a nut case, tell that to Jimmy Page, he says the same thing & who's to argue with a legend like that?
CD Baby & Demon Doll records doesn't have any quality control. Although I've only had a few problems with cd baby, there's no assurance you'll get genuine lossless from them however Demon Doll seems to have no problem issuing mp3 cd's.
Demon Doll just says we deliver what the bands give us & say tough luck sucker, you're stuck with it, have a nice day. It's a shame, I really admire their band line up but unless they start identifying their CD catalogs audio quality, they've lost any further sales from me with their chinese style quality control.
I-tunes sells the m4a format which can be lossless quality & likely will be on newer releases but it's a crap shoot if you get older more obscure stuff however they have given me a refund on stuff I complained wasn't up to snuff.
Bandcamp on the other hand has rigid quality control & from my understanding, won't allow non genuine lossless to get on their site. Hooray for them & so far I've not got any junk audio from there.
If you're buying music directly from the bands & expecting lossless, you better ask before plunking down your cash. Some won't send or may not even have it in lossless quality unless you ask. I've got burned several times so far.
These are the following I bought that were not lossless grade audio. If you've run across any such incidents, plz post them here. If you're content with accepting mp3 when you pay to get lossless, then ignore this post.
Shel Shoc's - Locked & loaded cd sold by jammin recordings, issued by demon doll records that I paid $30 for was equivalent to a 192k mp3 & jammin records refused to give a refund after sending a spectrograph proving it was inferior & demon doll passed the buck to the band as sending an inferior copy to distribute & never got a response from the band to a message I sent on their facebook page yet.
Big Guns - down but not out from CD Baby is not lossless & have no idea if it ever was available on cd or lossless.
The band Inside Out sent me their 1st cd, wasn't lossless & after a chat with them, don't have the pride in their music or a problem taking your money for junk mp3 tho they admit ability to produce original quality.
Steve Piersons - capitol sessions from cd baby is not lossless. (update... cd baby quit selling flacs now, big bummer!)
Megasonics - Intense... according to the band they couldn't master it to lossless quality so if you have that cd, it's not a bootleg & as good as can be had.
Mickey Finn. I've been hunting forever for a funky version of "get it on" that Mickey Finn did & on amazon was a cd called classic hits where the audio sampler had the correct song but was wrong on the cd plus it was a crappy mp3 cd to boot. I finally got it on i-tunes but it's on 2 releases they have, 1 is a really bad mp3 & the other is spot on.
& speaking of i-tunes, they generally dish out flac quality on their m4a's but I got a buffalo sunn tune that wasn't even a 320 grade mp3, no it was a crummy 160 quality. Well I contacted the band who aren't together anymore & they said their record company was responsible for distribution quality & they've offered a better copy so if that comes thru, not all is lost.
Blue Lords sent a cd to me that was just mp3 grade, not sure if they ever issued genuine cd audio.
Critical Mass from Miami issued a cd which has nearly the same name as their 1st & only vinyl release back in the 80's & very rare, likely you'll never find a copy but bummer, it wasn't lossless.
